An institution that owns, and does not advise.
A family office is the private investment institution of a single family or principal. It exists because capital of a certain size and permanence is poorly served by intermediaries: it needs no distribution, it answers to no investment committee, and its horizon is longer than any fund that could be sold to it.
What follows from that is speed and concentration. A family office underwrites on judgment rather than on consensus, which allows it to move on an opportunity in days and to hold a position at a weight no diversified mandate would permit. The same structure allows it to do nothing for long periods, which is the harder and more valuable discipline.
Gord Holdings is the family office above an operating group: a merchant bank, an operating ecosystem, and the properties beneath them. It owns; it does not advise. Where the group needs an institution to speak, that institution is GDA Group. This page exists because the entity at the top of a structure should be legible, not because the structure requires explaining.
